Raw Foods Lifestyle Get-Together in White Plains, NY
onSunday August 5, 2007
Join us once again at the White Plains home of Vickie Hatcher to meet and greet members of the Greater New York area raw food community while enjoying an all-you-can-eat monomeal of delicious, summery watermelon.
It’s been five years since Carol Pessin and Vickie Hatcher first learned about eating raw food and began weekly trips into Manhattan to get to know and learn from the larger raw food community. Over the years they have been joined by Randi and Vallerie and have often delivered a carload of Westchesterites to the Big Apple meeting rooms at Caravan of Dreams, Bonobo’s, Quintessence, Pure Food and Wine and now Hartley House on West 46th Street.
These ladies will share highlights of their journeys on Sunday
and invite you to join them to create an out-of-doors raw food symposium on a summer afternoon. In previous years Karen Ranzi, Matthew Grace and Francine Mienik have each been featured speakers. All three have been invited to join us again this year, but the featured speakers will be you.
Please feel free to invite friends or newcomers and to bring children, well behaved pets, Frisbees or outdoor games. This is a great opportunity to strengthen your commitment to a raw foods lifestyle and to introduce others to the concept of saying “no” to cooked foods.
Cost:Just $5.00 per person this year (children 10 and under free). This includes a free ride from the train station for as many as we can manage.
We will be meeting the Harlem Line Metro North train that leaves Grand Central Station at 12:50 PM (an express train) and arrives in White Plains at 1:25 PM. Proceed to taxi stand in front of train station.
Notes and Directions:21 Bloomingdale Road is a 200-acre compound which is the home of the Westchester Division of New York Presbyterian Hospital, a psychiatric facility. The grounds look like a college campus and contain more trees than patients and staff combined. The Cheesecake Factory and Neiman Marcus are on the opposite side of Bloomingdale Rd. across from the entrance.
Once you pass the security check point, proceed up the long, curving driveway. You will go over two bright yellow speed bumps which are relatively close together. Proceed ahead to a more distant third speed bump. Soon after 3rd speed bump, make a left turn; you can only turn left; there will be a brown wooden sign on your left saying public parking and staff annex II parking. (All previous wooden signs have been on your right) When you make the left turn, the parking lot will be on your right. Follow the road a short distance to the second and last house on the right (most of the buildings will be on your left).
Cottage 3 is a large, stately brick house on a slight hill with a circular driveway. Park on the grass. Enter through front door to sign in and see location of restroom; then proceed to outdoor patio and grounds. Event held rain or shine as there is plenty of space indoors too.
Check Mapquest for driving directions to the grounds and/or follow directions below:
1. Take NYState Thruway 87 North to Exit 8, White Plains, which puts you on 287 East (There has been a lot of road construction as you approach 287 East and on 287East. Drive cautiously.)
2. Take 287 East to Exit 8W-Bloomingdale Road/Westchester Mall Pl (Exit 8W is the first of two #8 exits, 8W and 8E. It comes up quickly and there is no shoulder on the road, so be careful.)Stay in the left lane once on the 8W exit ramp. At end of exit ramp there is a traffic light. Make a left turn at the light.
3. After left turn onto Bloomingdale Road, stay in extreme left lane, which becomes a left turn lane at the next light and make left turn onto the driveway of New York Hospital.
4. Proceed to security checkpoint and say you are visiting Vickie Hatcher in Cottage 3. Proceed a short distance to first speed bump, and follow directions above.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE: Take West Side Highway North, which turns into Saw Mill River Parkway. Proceed North on the Saw Mill to Exit 20, Rts 87 and 287. Exit 20 puts you on NYState Thruway 87 for a few split seconds and then, almost immediately, get off at Exit 8, per #1 above, which puts you on 287 East and in sync with directions above.
